Mother and I drove to campus today to meet with one of the financial aid staff regarding loans and the dreaded "total cost of medical education" I've thus far avoided defining. Speaking casually as we drove home:
Me: So with all the loans it'll be...
Mother: ...about $175,000 over 4 years.
Me: *heart attack*
Whoa, sticker shock! It seems like an astronomical sum from this side of the fence, even though I know the cost would be much, much higher if I were going the private school route again. I'd be curious to find out where all those tuition dollars are really going - I suspect that a sizable chunk is not necessarily going toward my personal education and betterment. Of course, that's likely to be the case everywhere, but it is somewhat unsettling.
In short: I am going to be working for a very, very long time to pay off all these loans. Sigh.
